4 Steps to a Simple Skin Care Routine
Everyone knows that skin care is important, but our opinions of what good skin care actually is can vary significantly. Some people believe that you need to go to a professional to have good skin, whereas others think you need to occasionally rub in some cream, and others who only treat their skin monthly or less. Some people will be obsessed with looking after their skin all the time. Skin care is really just a routine for looking after your skin which should not be complicated or expensive.
When you start your skin care routine you need to discover whether your skin is dry, oily, normal or sensitive and select appropriate products. There are creams on the market to suit everyone, you usually have to try out a few first to find the ones best for you.
The first part of a skin care routine is cleansing. This means removing dirt and oil from your skin. Cleansers usually contain water, surfactants and oil. Try to use ones without soap. Use water that is either too hot or too cold to wash your face in as extremes of temperature can damage your skin. Do not cleanse too often either, as the oils in your skin are there for a reason and you do not want to remove them too often.
You need to exfoliate your skin which removes the old dead skin cells so they can be replaced by new ones, otherwise any creams or lotions you apply will go into the old dead cells and serve no purpose. You should do this about 4 times a week unless you have dry skin when half this should be enough. You may need to do this more often in hot weather.
Now your skin will be ready for moisturizer. Even if you skin in oily, it will need to be moisturized. The moisture in your skin will be locked in. However, using too much can cause you to have clogged pores. As different moisturizers will work differently on your skin you will need to experiment to find out how much you need. If you apply it when you skin is still a bit wet, then you have the best chance of holding in the most moisture.
Finally you need to put on sunscreen. Some moisturizers will contain these already, but check to make sure that they are a high enough factor. You will need UV protection regardless of the weather during the sunny months of the year. The weather may suddenly change, and there is a bigger chance of sunburn on a cloudy day than most people think.
So to conclude, a skin care routine is a simple thing to do. Work out the best lotions and creams for you and then go through your routine at least 5 times a week (every morning is usually the optimum time), do not do it too often as you do not want to harm your skin.
